Understanding a child’s psychological needs is not easy, but it must be done. Children at different stages of development behave differently. A 5-6-year-old behaves differently than a teenager.
Noticing and accepting your child’s likes, dislikes, and traits (good or bad) is key to being a good parent. When you accept them for who they are, they gain a sense of security. Here are some tips to help you understand your child:
1. Observe
You have to know your son if you want to understand him. It is possible to do this simply by being close to him and observing him. When you see him play, ask for something, react to situations in certain ways, his interactions with others, etc., you can learn a lot about his personality in general.
2. Be Your Child’s Best Friend
Showing your child that you are always there for them when they need you can be your first step in achieving this goal. It makes them feel safe, loved, and wanted and helps them open up to you.
3. Spend Quality Time With Your Child
Being close to your child is not enough. To get to know him better, do activities together like playing games, cooking (kids are always willing to help), cleaning the closets or his room, etc.
4. Praise Your Child
Complimenting him for a job well done will boost his self-esteem. However, excessive praise can make him arrogant and snobbish.
5. Listening
By listening to your child, you will get to know them better. This will make him feel like you care about his life. This, in turn, will help strengthen the bond between the two of you.
6. Talking
Talking to your child about things that interest him can help him open up to you. This makes it easier for you to start a conversation and get to know your child better.
7. Concentrate when you speak
Always make eye contact with your child when speaking. This will ensure that your child believes you are listening and that what his saying is of utmost importance to you.
8. Respect
When your child talks about their insecurities, fears, or embarrassing situations, don’t laugh or make fun of them. You must understand that it is not particularly easy for a child (especially in puberty) to open up.It must have taken a lot of courage from him to do that.
9. Explain things
Children up to the age of 5 to 6 obey any rules you make or decisions you make to improve them. The real problem lies with the teenagers. guilt at his age.In such situations, just try to explain why you had to make a certain decision or do a certain thing. They may be mad at you at the time, but in time they will understand.
10. Take an opinion
If necessary, ask for their opinion. It makes him feel important and boosts his self-esteem.
